Buyer framework
How to compare professional microneedling devices.
Ten criteria, and the question to ask about each. This is written to be useful whether or not you buy from us. If a competing vendor answers these better, buy theirs.
The one that decides profitability.
If you compare nothing else, compare cartridge cost against your real annual volume. A practice running ten treatments a week buys about 520 cartridges a year. At a $50 per cartridge difference, that is $26,000 a year, on the same treatment, for the same patients, in the same room.
Device price is a single line on a single invoice. Cartridge price is a line on every invoice you will ever receive.
The ten criteria
What to compare, and what to ask.
- 01
Clearance, and what it actually covers
Ask for the clearance number, not a badge. Then ask what the device is cleared to treat, for which patients. Clearance applies to a specific device, a specific indication and a specific population. A device being cleared does not mean every use you have seen advertised is cleared.
“What is your clearance number, and what are the exact Indications For Use?”
- 02
Cartridge cost, multiplied by your real volume
This is the number that decides microneedling profitability, and it is the one most easily glossed over at the demo. A device is a one-time cost. Cartridges are a cost you pay on every single treatment, forever.
“What does one cartridge cost, and what stops that price rising next year?”
- 03
Total cost of ownership, not sticker price
Add the device, cartridges at your annual volume, training, warranty exclusions, service, shipping and loaner terms. A cheaper device with an expensive cartridge is usually the more expensive device by month eight.
“Show me three years of total cost at my treatment volume.”
- 04
Depth control and how finely it adjusts
Range matters less than increments. A wide maximum depth you will never clinically use is a specification, not a benefit. The ability to make small adjustments between facial areas is what providers actually use every day.
“What is the adjustment increment, and how is depth held under load?”
- 05
Cartridge options for different areas
One cartridge configuration means one approach to every area of the face. Delicate work around the eyes, nose and lip is not the same job as covering a full cheek. Ask what configurations exist and what each is for.
“Which cartridge configurations do you offer, and when is each indicated?”
- 06
What happens when it breaks
Every device fails eventually. The question is what your schedule does that week. Ask for the loaner commitment in writing, with a timeframe, and ask what the warranty actually excludes.
“If it fails on a Friday, what happens to my Saturday bookings?”
- 07
Training, and who it covers
Training that covers one provider is a problem the first time that provider leaves. Ask whether it covers the team, whether it is repeatable for new hires, and whether it is included or billed.
“Is training included for the whole team, and for future hires?”
- 08
Evidence that matches the claim
Ask what the evidence actually measured, on how many patients, over what period. Output specifications like pins per second or motor speed describe the device, not the patient outcome. They are not the same thing.
“What clinical endpoint was measured, and in how many patients?”
- 09
Supply reliability
A cartridge you cannot get is worse than a cartridge that costs too much. Ask about lead times, minimum orders and what happened the last time there was a backorder.
“What is the current lead time, and when did you last go on backorder?”
- 10
What the vendor does after the sale
Most devices that underperform in practices are not bad devices. They are devices nobody launched: no protocols, no consultation language, no rebooking process, no marketing. Ask what support exists once the invoice is paid.
“What does month two look like, after the excitement wears off?”
This framework describes how to evaluate professional microneedling systems generally. It does not characterize any specific competing product. Confirm every specification, price, clearance and warranty term directly with each vendor in writing before you buy.
